This classic chocolate bundt cake is amazing, wonderful, incredible…really it is a chocolate lovers dream! Save this recipe to make for your love on Valentines day–because if you make it now, it will ruin your New Years Resolutions! It is that good! I got this recipe from my sweet friend Karen. I happened to stop by one afternoon at just the right time…. the most wonderful smell was coming from her kitchen. She had just pulled this delight out of the oven and was pouring the frosting on! Being the generous and gracious woman she always is, she insisted I take a plate of slices home to share with my family! Our lucky day! It has been a family favorite ever since–Thank you Karen!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 devils food cake mix (Dry–don’t make it according to directions on the box)
  • 1 –4 serving instant chocolate pudding mix
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • ½ cup warm water
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 1 ½ cups semi sweet chocolate chips

Frosting:

  • 8 Tbsp butter (not margarine)
  • 4 Tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1/3 cup evaporated milk (I used 2%-it worked great)
  • 4 cups sifted powdered sugar

Instructions

Cake:

  1. Place all ingredients except chocolate chips, in a large mixing bowl. Blend with electric mixer 1 minute.
  2. Stir down sides. Continue to mix on medium speed for 2-3 minutes. Stir in chocolate chips. Pour batter into prepared bundt pan.
  3. Bake 45-50 minutes at 350. Cool 20 minutes. Invert onto serving platter.

Frosting:

  1. Melt butter in medium saucepan over low heat. Whisk in cocoa and milk. Bring mixture just to boil, stirring constantly. Remove from heat. Beat in powdered sugar with electric mixer until thickened and smooth. Pour warm frosting over warm cake. This recipe makes a lot of frosting.

Hi! This is very similar to my most recent post. It is the best cake ever! I accidentally forgot to put the mini chocolate chips in last time and right before throwing it in the oven my family made me mix them in because they said it was the best part, to each their own but it is an awesome cake 🙂

    Dear Anonymous,
Yes you could easily leave out the chocolate chips–but i wouldn't recommend it! They just add to to the delicous chocolatey-ness of the recipe! I am trying to remember–I think that they do melt while baking—-but they are distinct little spots of rich chocolate. Mmmm this is making me want to make this now! Hope you enjoy it as much as I do:)

    This looks soooooooooooo delicious!

Was wondering if the choc chips could be left out of the recipe with good results?

Also, does the chips melt while baking or stay whole in the cake after it is done?

You have an excellent site, and I am so happy that I surfed onto it!

    Thank you 🙂

    jared and tara phelps,
I think this cake would be great to sit out and look pretty. It all depends on the consistency of your frosting. You can make it as thick or thin as you desire depending on how much powdered sugar you use. The recipe is usually just perfect consistency–but I have noticed that since I moved to a humed climate things don't work exactly like they did in drier Utah. So I think you should be fine–but just test the frosting before applying to the cake and make sure it is the right consistency. Good luck–I think you will love this cake–it is awesome!! And even if it doesn't look perfect it will taste incredible!

So, I'm thinking about making this for a church meeting, but I would like to present it throughout the meeting on a cake platter before we serve it. So, my question is, did the icing stay that way, or was that photo taken immediately after pouring it? is there any way to make this cake look as good as this for a few hours is my question 🙂

Tribute to my sweet Mom

I developed my love of cooking at an early age “helping” my Mom bake cookies, make dinner, and knead bread. She had quite the well of patience! She is the one that taught me about measurements, leavening agents, egg-washes, the basic white sauce, and numerous other mysteries of the kitchen!  I cherish the memories I have of learning to cook at her side. Thank you Mom! You instilled in me a respect for work as well as a joy in creating delicious things. I love you! xoxo
