East Slow Cooker Pulled Pork

Kalua pork is a serious favorite around our house.  If you haven’t tried it yet, you’ve just got to… and soon!  My mom made this from time to time growing up, and I loved it… but I had kind of forgotten about it until my own family moved in next to a Hawaiian family five  years ago.  The Wongs have thrown a Luau from time to time, and my husband and I fell in love with their Kalua pork.  After five long years, I’ve finally finagled the recipe out of them.   Okay, okay.  I’m pretty sure they would have given it to me any time I asked!  This recipe is for the crockpot – my favorite!  And I’ve doubled and halved the recipe, which both work out fabulously.  This pork freezes amazingly, and the leftovers make great burritos, salads, and sandwiches.  But I have to admit my favorite is still to eat it with coconut rice and fresh fruit.  With warm, sunny days around the corner, I’m thinking Luaus and Kalua Pork all summer long!

Other recipe to serve at a Luau:

Description

This recipe is so simple but always turns out perfect!!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 lb pork butt roast
  • 1 1/2 Tablespoons Hawaiian Sea Salt (can substitute regular sea salt)
  • 1–1 1/2 Tablespoons Liquid Smoke

Instructions

  1. Pierce pork all over with a carving knife. Rub salt all over the roast, then rub with liquid smoke. Place in the crockpot on low for 16-20 hours, turning once during cooking time (if you are short on time I think the pork is still good starting at about 8 hours). Remove from the crockpot and shred , adding the drippings back in to moisten the meat.

The recipe sounds grate. I am an inpatient man and cant wait the 8 to 20 hour for the roast to cook in the slow cooker. I use my electric intant pot pressure cooker. I make sure I have at least 1/2 cup liquid and cook on high pressure for 90 minutes and the pork just schreds its self.

I love this recipe. Recently I made a different kalua pork recipe for church function (they gave me the ingredients and recipe to make) and it was NOT good! 🙁 I was so mad I didn’t just make this recipe that I know is so yummy. I always use a pork butt roast like the recipe calls for and I cook it for 20 hours. With coconut rice it really is one of my favorite dinners! It’s also really yummy in other stuff like MIndy mentioned.

I made this last week and we LOVED it! So simple, easy and so GOOD! I put two lean Costco roasts (the 97% fat free round ones that come in a 3 pack each individually wrapped) in my crockpot before I went to bed Saturday night. We enjoyed fabulous Kulua Pork after church the next day. Perfecxtly easy and so tender and yummy! Thanks Mindy!!

Tribute to my sweet Mom

I developed my love of cooking at an early age “helping” my Mom bake cookies, make dinner, and knead bread. She had quite the well of patience! She is the one that taught me about measurements, leavening agents, egg-washes, the basic white sauce, and numerous other mysteries of the kitchen!  I cherish the memories I have of learning to cook at her side. Thank you Mom! You instilled in me a respect for work as well as a joy in creating delicious things. I love you! xoxo
