These Lemon Poppy Seed Scones are one of the most requested baked goods in our family. Whenever my boys come home for a visit, this is one of the recipes I always make. They are devoured and gone in no time!!

There’s something about the flavor of lemon that feels like pure sunshine in a bite. Add a touch of poppy seed crunch and wrap it all in a tender, buttery scone, and you’ve got yourself a breakfast (or anytime) winner. These Lemon Poppy Seed Scones are everything a good scone should be: golden on the outside, soft and flaky inside, and bursting with fresh citrus flavor.

Why You’ll Love These Scones:

Easy to make—no mixer required!

Bright, citrusy flavor from fresh lemon zest and juice

Subtle crunch from poppy seeds in every bite

Moist and tender crumb, thanks to cold butter and buttermilk or cream

These scones are super easy to make but there are a few important tips to guarantee the perfect texture. First make sure the butter is icy cold. Next be sure to NOT over mix or over handle the scone dough too much. This will keep the scones light and flaky.

Lemon Poppy Seed Scones Make Ahead Tip

You can freeze the unbaked scones! Just cut and place them on a baking sheet, freeze until solid, then store in a freezer bag. Bake straight from frozen—just add a few extra minutes to the baking time. Makes it the perfect treat for guests.

These Lemon Poppy Seed Scones are guaranteed to brighten your kitchen and your mood. They are so good warm and crumbly, straight from the oven. 💛

I made these for Valentines Day (when cut they looked like a broken heart) for my sons teacher at school. She refused to share, and had to have the recipe. A great success and a repeat recipe for sure!

Tribute to my sweet Mom

I developed my love of cooking at an early age “helping” my Mom bake cookies, make dinner, and knead bread. She had quite the well of patience! She is the one that taught me about measurements, leavening agents, egg-washes, the basic white sauce, and numerous other mysteries of the kitchen!  I cherish the memories I have of learning to cook at her side. Thank you Mom! You instilled in me a respect for work as well as a joy in creating delicious things. I love you! xoxo
