make a spice Cake from a yellow cake mix

I am making the wonderfully delicious Pumpkin Cream Trifle today… the only problem being, I didn’t have a spice cake mix in the pantry.  The thought of trying to cram a grocery store trip into the few minutes available between baby and toddler nap times, not to mention the pain of dragging all three kids through the store (I’m sure plenty of you relate), had me reconsidering the importance of a spice cake mix.  I mean, I’m sure I could make one on my own. I have a yellow cake mix and lots of spices, after all.  So I rolled up my sleeves and experimented… with yummy results, I’m happy to say! Now I have a “recipe”  for how to make a Make a Spice Cake from a Yellow Cake Mix!

What you will need to Make a Spice Cake from a Yellow Cake Mix:

  • yellow cake mix box
  • ground cinnamon
  • ground nutmeg
  • ground ginger
  • allspice or cloves

The pumpkin spice cake layer for my trifle ended up deliciously fragrant, with just the right amounts of spice.  It’s so easy I hesitated to post it on here but then I decided I better. After all, it’s often the easiest shortcuts that can save a lot of time and hassle when we are in a pinch.  So here you go!

And don’t forget to make this amazing Pumpkin Cream Trifle!  It is SOOO good!!

If you are making the trifle–this is the trifle bowl I love!

Wow!! Best yellow cake i’ve ever made!
i replaced the water with coconut milk, and used egg replacer bc i’m vegan.
I like my cake a bit more spiced, so i did a little over 3Tbs pumpkin pie spice(prob closer to 4 lol).
I make my cakes in an Asian rice cooker, so they come out fluffy and moist..plus no need for an oven on hot days.
This cake was amazing!!! I cut slices, and served with a simple sugar icing, and some with vegan bourbon buttercream. It’s amazing both ways or just plain.
    Fantastic!

Our local store gives away a box of cake mix for your birthday month and all I could get was vanilla but I wanted to make spice cake. I did a quick google search in the store and found your recipe. Looking at the comments, it seemed like pillsbury cake mix (what I have) may overpower the spice a bit so I elected to add 1 1/2 times each spice and it came out wonderfully. It’s a little more flavorful that store bought spice cake mix but not too much so. Very tasty with a vanilla buttercream. Thanks!

Logan B said she used pumpkin pie spice, but didn’t say how much. If anyone else has used it, how much was used? Thanks

I found a way to make it even easier! McCormick has a “Pumpkin Pie Spice” with all four of these ingredients in it! Obviously it’s to be added to pumpkin pies, but doesn’t have the pumpkin flavor in it so no worries about that. Just in case you wanted to get just the one spice

McCormick has just come out the a “Pumpkin Spice” extract – maybe follow the recipe and add 1 teaspoon of extract?

Add flavored jello and extract to the cake mix and you’re golden. 1 cake mix (plus your eggs, oil and water), 1 small package of lemon jello, 1 tsp. lemon extract. Enjoy!

Hmm I wonder if the Gluten Free mix has a stronger flavor than the normal mix?? because I have had great luck using this “recipe” with a regular cake mix. I have two sons who eat gluten free and some of the baked goods do have extra flavor to mask some of the different flavors. If you find a good GF mix that it works with–let me know!!

Thanks for the tip on how to make spice cake from yellow cake mix. I used this to make a pumpkin spice cake for my friends at work with Pillsbury gluten free yellow cake mix. Unfortunately, the spice was hard to discern because this mix is so overwhelmingly vanilla flavored. I think a white cake mix might work better or add double the spice to this mix. Next time I’ll try another brand.

Thank you. I found this because, it’s getting very hard to find spice, lemon, etc. mixes around here. I’m going to just start buying white mixes and doing my own. (I already make my own seasoning mixes for cooking, ie. taco, Cajun, french fry)

This is great information. I shop at Aldi for my basics and they don’t stock spice cake mix. This will save a trip to a full service store, and thus save me money in buying extra stuff I find. Needed for my Thanksgiving dessert apple spice dessert.

In the fall when I like to make pumkpkin chocolate chip muffins, I use this recipe frequently. My recipe calls for 1 spice cake mix, 1 small can of pumpkin, and 1/2 C (or to taste) of choc chips. No other oil, liquid, etc. Sometimes I can’t find the spice cake mixes, or they cost quite a bit more (??!) so this is my go-to “recipe”. Thanks!

Tribute to my sweet Mom

I developed my love of cooking at an early age “helping” my Mom bake cookies, make dinner, and knead bread. She had quite the well of patience! She is the one that taught me about measurements, leavening agents, egg-washes, the basic white sauce, and numerous other mysteries of the kitchen!  I cherish the memories I have of learning to cook at her side. Thank you Mom! You instilled in me a respect for work as well as a joy in creating delicious things. I love you! xoxo
