Heart Shaped Cinnamon Rolls for Valentine’s Day

February 7, 2013 by Mel and Boys Kitchen + 8 Comments

We've been getting excited for Valentine's Day around my house.  And since we've been eating mostly really healthy since the New Year, my family was extra thrilled when they came home to heart shaped orange rolls one afternoon.  I cheated and used a can of pillsbury orange rolls from the store, but I think I might make the real thing Valentine's morning or for Family Home Evening next week.  Some

How To: Shape Crescent Rolls

February 4, 2013 by Mel and Boys Kitchen + 9 Comments

I have received many questions regarding how to create the crescent roll shape via  email and  in the comments section of my roll recipe "Amazing Buttermilk Rolls" so I thought I would take you through it step by step:) First let me tell you that my favorite roll dough by far, is the Amazing Buttermilk recipe.  Not only does it create the perfect roll in my opinion, but

Baked Chicken Teriyaki

February 2, 2013 by Mel and Boys Kitchen + 6 Comments

Talk about an easy, absolutely delicious dinner!  I love this recipe and my entire family loves it too.  I suppose you could make it with chicken breasts instead of thighs but I highly recommend trying it with thighs first.  They are so flavorful and moist... if you're not a fan yet, you will be after this!  I like to serve it with broccoli, it seems to soak up and compliment the yummy

Healthy Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana Smoothie

January 29, 2013 by Mel and Boys Kitchen + 38 Comments

While I was in Seattle last fall visiting my sister Brittany, she introduced me to this DELICIOUS and healthy chocolate peanut butter banana smoothie and I have been making it ever since.   It is the perfect treat without the guilt.  No fattening ice cream is used, but you can't tell!  I normally use 1% milk, all natural peanut butter and agave to sweeten.  Seriously fabulous!  It tastes like you

Strawberry Jam Vinaigrette

January 23, 2013 by Mel and Boys Kitchen + 3 Comments

How are you doing on your New Years Resolutions this year?  Just like every year one of my top goals has to do with my health...  getting more sleep, exercising everyday and eating more veggies.  With this in mind, I try to have at least one salad a day.   I find that I will eat salads more if  I have some good stuff on hand, especially dressings like this Strawberry Jam Vinaigrette (since I

Healthy Whole Wheat Banana Bread Pancakes

January 10, 2013 by Mel and Boys Kitchen + 4 Comments

The new year is here... along with resolutions to be a healthier new me in 2013!  While I am not swearing off goodies (I believe in moderation in all things), I am sugared out after the holidays.  Aren't you? So we've been eating pretty clean around our house of late.  But if there is one thing I will not do, it is give up flavor to be "healthy."  Obviously I love eating and value good food, or I

Happy New Year friends!  I hope your holidays were wonderful! We had a very relaxing Christmas season, in fact we are still on holiday.  My boys don't go back to school until January 9th, crazy, huh?  We aren't complaining though! I have time to make these wonderful pretzel rolls! Do you have leftover ham from your New Years Day dinner?  In  my family we traditionally have ham, and just like

Snowman on a Stick

Snowman donuts

My little boy and I made these cute little snowmen on a stick for his preschool birthday party today.  I'm crazy and had two babies in December.  And one day apart no less!  Those of you with Christmas babies can relate.  We are very busy Mamas this time of year what with trying to make sure our little darlings' birthdays don't get beat out by holiday to-do.  This year I got lucky.  My 4 year old

Tribute to my sweet Mom

I developed my love of cooking at an early age “helping” my Mom bake cookies, make dinner, and knead bread. She had quite the well of patience! She is the one that taught me about measurements, leavening agents, egg-washes, the basic white sauce, and numerous other mysteries of the kitchen!  I cherish the memories I have of learning to cook at her side. Thank you Mom! You instilled in me a respect for work as well as a joy in creating delicious things. I love you! xoxo
