Grandma’s Rolls

July 20, 2009 by Mel and Boys Kitchen + 20 Comments

These rolls are from my maternal grandmother, Ruth Rice, who happens to be a fantastic cook! Grandma has always baked her own breads, canned and bottled her own fruits, veggies, jams, pickles, etc (grown in her enormous garden), made all kinds of wondrous candy and even raised her own chickens! She takes the concept of work ethic to a whole new level - and I have only touched on her food related

I'm finally settled in my new home and back online! Yahoo!! :) Even through the chaos of moving, I have not wasted time in the kitchen... here is a recipe I tried out, it is Ina Garten's Stewed Lentils and Tomatoes from Barefoot Contessa's recipe book 'At Home'. I love that it is healthy and delicious. It has a wonderful curry spice to it that is scrumptious too!

Snickerdoodle Muffins

July 6, 2009 by Mel and Boys Kitchen + 25 Comments

Last week my little boys and I were in the mood for muffins and so I came up with these little Snickerdoodle Muffins --a fun twist on some of our favorite cookies. My little sweeties loved them. They really hit the spot.  My boys especially loved the butter dipped cinnamon sugar tops. I made them into mini muffins and we snacked on them all day. You could of course make them in to regular sized

They come together fast with ingredients I always have on hand. These brownies are always a hit and the recipe makes a lot. Perfect for a neighborhood party, family reunion or if you REALLY like brownies! I hope you

Barefoot Contessa’s Coconut Cake

June 12, 2009 by Mel and Boys Kitchen + 29 Comments

This was a post from Sisters Cafe (our original blog) that my sister Brittany shared: Oh wow, this cake is delicious... but then aren't all of Ian Garten's recipes to die for?!! It is dense and moist (almost like a pound cake) and has a delicious flavor! It was definitely a special treat... made for a special birthday girl. Melanie just had a birthday and we had a great big birthday bash with

Zucchini Soup

May 17, 2009 by Mel and Boys Kitchen + 13 Comments

This Zucchini Soup is a recipe from 2009 that my sister in law Amy Sterzer shared. She said: "Zucchini Soup may not be much to look at but I love this soup! It can be very healthy and yet is still extremely tasty. The recipe calls for cheese, sour cream, and bacon as garnish which is delish but not a requirement. I make it without those garnishes all the time and my family still likse it.

Double Chocolate Banana Bread

May 14, 2009 by Mel and Boys Kitchen + 104 Comments

Calling all chocolate lovers! This is the banana bread for you! I got this Double Chocolate Banana Bread recipe out of a magazine called Cooking Pleasures. It described the bread as "having it all: rich fudginess, moist texture, and good banana flavor. " I would wholeheartedly agree! I am glad I had a bunch of very ripe bananas that need to be used when I came across this recipe. I think that is

Tribute to my sweet Mom

I developed my love of cooking at an early age “helping” my Mom bake cookies, make dinner, and knead bread. She had quite the well of patience! She is the one that taught me about measurements, leavening agents, egg-washes, the basic white sauce, and numerous other mysteries of the kitchen!  I cherish the memories I have of learning to cook at her side. Thank you Mom! You instilled in me a respect for work as well as a joy in creating delicious things. I love you! xoxo
