Steamed Broccoli with Lime Dressing

February 5, 2009 by Mel and Boys Kitchen + 11 Comments

This Steamed Broccoli with Lime Dressing recipe is especially great with asian cuisine, but still refreshing with any meal. If you don't like sesame oil, try melted butter in its place. Make sure to serve hot! This is just a simple way to make plain steamed broccoli taste amazing!  Vegetables are not always my kids favorite part of dinner but adding some fun flavors will help! Other great

Ribollita

January 29, 2009 by Mel and Boys Kitchen + 8 Comments

Italian Bean and Rustic Bread Soup Ribollita is a traditional (peasant) Tuscan soup whose name translates as ‘reboiled’. Traditionally it sits on the stove for a few days, being reheated and dipped into whenever one is hungry, and it develops amazing flavor. Tradtionally the soup has stale bread added to thicken it. With this recipe you put dried rustic bread cubes or my favorite, croutons on the

Whole Wheat Blender Pancakes

January 12, 2009 by Mel and Boys Kitchen + 10 Comments

I have been making these whole wheat blender pancakes for years because they are very easy, very nutritious and my family loves them! They are hearty and healthy. A great way to fill up little tummies and start the day off with whole grains! I love these with fresh berries (or any fruit)and a drizzle of pure maple syrup or old fashioned buttermilk syrup. My oldest son nicknamed the buttermilk

Christmas cream eggs

This recipe, like Chicken a la King, has been served for generations on Christmas in our family! (We have a lot of traditions!) We only have them on Christmas morning--and they are a VERY special treat!! Eggs cooked like this are AMAZINGLY wonderful! Mmmm--my boys actually ask for them at every holiday. They argue that we could call them Halloween/ Valentines (etc) eggs. Unlike Chicken a la King

Homemade Caramels

December 22, 2008 by Mel and Boys Kitchen + 12 Comments

This homemade caramels recipe is from my Grandmother and it's fabulous! It makes such smooth caramels - they are wonderful dipped in chocolate, made into turtles or just eaten plain! Christmas candy making takes a lot of time and energy but I look forward to it all year. It is such a fun time to spend with the women in my family! Unfortunately I'm stuck here at home today making these alone due to

Chicken á La King

December 18, 2008 by Mel and Boys Kitchen + 27 Comments

This is a recipe for Chicken á La King – “Chicken for the King”. Our family has had this for Christmas Eve dinner for generations! It is a fun tradition – a way of celebrating the newborn King. I just love the tradition, and I just LOVE this dinner. Although I think it’s incredibly delicious, I absolutely will not make it on any other day of the year. It’s kept special just for the night before

Cranberry Pumpkin Bread

November 17, 2008 by Mel and Boys Kitchen + 13 Comments

I have been making this Cranberry Pumpkin Bread for years, and I can't remember where I got the recipe. I think it was on the Food Network. Anyway, the combination of tart cranberries and sweet pumpkin bread is really REALLY good! Oh, and it makes your home smell divine! No need for those scented candles the day you bake this. This time I made the recipe into 2 loaves (smaller ones) and 9 mini

Tribute to my sweet Mom

I developed my love of cooking at an early age “helping” my Mom bake cookies, make dinner, and knead bread. She had quite the well of patience! She is the one that taught me about measurements, leavening agents, egg-washes, the basic white sauce, and numerous other mysteries of the kitchen!  I cherish the memories I have of learning to cook at her side. Thank you Mom! You instilled in me a respect for work as well as a joy in creating delicious things. I love you! xoxo
